COLE SCHOOL - Herman District No. 7

Wood-frame building originally stood on the northwest corner of the intersection of Hwy S and Astor Road (Section 30 - Town Herman), less than 2 miles NE of Woodland. The Cole School was closed at the end of the 1948-49 school year (Mrs. Florence Nodolf- teacher).

WOODLAND SCHOOL - Herman District No. 12

Wood-frame building which stood on NW corner of intersection of old highways 109 and 67, right in the village of Woodland.  This school became increasingly overcrowded as the village grew, and by 1949 Mrs. Inez Rohrschneider had over 40 pupils crammed into that one building.  Local reporter and photographer Edgar Mueller took some photos of the conditions at the school which appeared in the Milwaukee Sentinel under the headline "Santa, Bring Us a Bigger School."

Santa solved the problem by using the now empty Cole School building!!! It was moved to Woodland in 1949 and placed just west of the Woodland School.  The Woodland building faced east & west, the Cole building was turned to face north & south.  Beginning with the 1949-50 school year, two teachers were now hired.  The primary grades were taught in the Woodland building and the upper grades in the old Cole building. It remained this way for 11 years.  The Woodland School(s) was closed at the end of the 1959-60 school year.
