Notes for Anita Zahn

Woodland School

Town of Herman

Anita became Mrs. Indermuhle on Oct. 18, 1930. Many people said she was Mrs. Indermuhle from 1927 -30, but marriage cert. proved otherwise. She was single during the teaching years.

Notes for Anita Kutz

Wuthnow School

Town of Leroy

Anita Kutz was also Anita Zahn before she married. She is not the same Anita Zahn that taught at Woodland School in Town of Herman.

Woodland School had so many students that for Christmas one year, a letter was written to Santa Claus asking for a new, bigger school.

When Cole School was closed it was then moved by the Woodland School and used for some of the grades.

WOODLAND SCHOOL - Herman District No. 12

Wood-frame building which stood on NW corner of intersection of old highways 109 and 67, right in the village of Woodland. This school became increasingly overcrowded as the village grew, and by 1949 Mrs. Inez Rohrschneider had over 40 pupils crammed into that one building. Local reporter and photographer Edgar Mueller took some photos of the conditions at the school which appeared in the Milwaukee Sentinel under the headline "Santa, Bring Us a Bigger School."

Santa solved the problem by using the now empty Cole School building!!! It was moved to Woodland in 1949 and placed just west of the Woodland School. The Woodland building faced east & west, the Cole building was turned to face north & south. Beginning with the 1949-50 school year, two teachers were now hired. The primary grades were taught in the Woodland building and the upper grades in the old Cole building. It remained this way for 11 years. The Woodland School(s) was closed at the end of the 1959-60 school year.
